Tefillin Project 2024

Prototyping Jewish Ritual Objects: Wearable Affordances for Intention and Connection

Abstract: This paper explores how the technological augmentation of tefillin—a traditional Jewish ritual object for prayer—might increase the potential for accessing deeper ways of knowing. Our case study features a prototype of a tefillin wearable, which incorporates a radio receiver that captures cosmic microwave background radiation. This enhancement aims to promote mindfulness and intentionality, enriching the user's spiritual experience by connecting ancient practices to the universe's origins. We discuss the broader implications of integrating religious and spiritual (R/S) imagination into HCI and design research, challenging the secular norms in these fields. By drawing on Jewish principles, we advocate for a more inclusive design approach that respects diverse cultural and spiritual perspectives. Our findings suggest that modern technologies can deepen spiritual experiences and preserve cultural continuity when integrated with traditional ritual objects. This work illustrates how traditional practices can inform contemporary design, expanding 'ways of knowing' in HCI and design research.
