There is a movement emerging across the country that is challenging students and educators to explore new ways of integrating art and design into the traditional "STEM" fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). Careers in the 21st century will demand the kind of creative problem solving that translates critical observation, critical thinking, and critical making into objects and experiences that provide utility and meaning. This move from STEM to STEAM (the "A" is for art) has also become an important part of the Brown and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) curriculum in recent years. This course will provide an opportunity for pre-college students to collaborate with Brown faculty and students on projects that embody STEAM principles.
In STEAM Studio, students will get the opportunity to explore their creative process across various disciplines, with a focus placed on cultivating creative thinking and critical making through an introduction to 2D and 3D design. Students will develop a foundation in both the technical and conceptual aspects of design and will be challenged to build upon this foundation to develop projects that emerge from their own curiosities and interests within the context of science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
Students will participate in project documentation, which supports both the process and product of many studio-based courses at Brown. Students will leave this course with a portfolio - a visual record of their work - that will give them the opportunity to present a personal narrative of their own creative identity.
Finally, "STEAM Studio:Design Projects" will involve a collaboration between students enrolled in this online course and students enrolled in the campus based class, which will enable them all to explore cutting-edge strategies for creating blended learning communities while developing projects that emerge from their own interests and modes of inquiry.
